Whilst both treatments can benefit a variety of concerns, including acne/problem skin, congested skin, visible signs of ageing, pigmentation issues and more – resurfacers and chemical peels work at different depths.
Resurfacing treatments are a milder version of a chemical peel, only working on the top, superficial layers of the skin. They use enzymes and acids to exfoliate the skin, leaving your skin looking and feeling soft, smooth and more refined. Resurfacing treatments usually require very little or no post-treatment downtime, enabling you to show off your improved complexion within a matter of days.
Chemical peels, however, delve deeper into the epidermis, accessing the mid to lower layers of the skin. Peels are ‘stronger’ than resurfacing treatments and can, therefore, result in up to 10 days post-treatment downtime while the skin ‘peels’ and heals. Often people try a resurfacing treatment before moving on to chemical peels.
What should you consider before getting a Chemical Peel Treatment?
It is important to follow the advice of your therapist before your facial peel. You must tell your practitioner if you have any history of scarring, reoccurring cold sores or if you’ve had any facial x-rays. You may be advised to refrain from taking certain medications prior to your treatment. You will be asked to prepare your skin, up to 2 – 6 weeks ahead of your treatment with specified products. It is vital that you follow any skin preparation guidance, as this will affect the success of your treatment and reduce any unwanted side effects.
You should discuss and agree with your skincare concerns and goals with your therapist, selecting the depth of your peel and which chemical solution would best suit your needs. A small ‘test patch’ may be required, usually on darker skin tones, to assess how your skin reacts to the chemical solution.
What happens during a Chemical Peel Treatment?
It is important that you feel relaxed and confident before and during your treatment at SkinSpirit. We want you to know what to expect so that you can feel safe and comfortable during your time with us.
Before any chemicals are applied to the skin, the skin is thoroughly cleansed. The chemical solution is then gently and carefully applied to your face using a soft gauze or a brush. This solution is left on the skin for several minutes. A neutralisation solution may then be used to neutralise the acids and to stop the chemical reaction. Any products are then removed from your skin. It is common to feel a mild burning sensation while the active ingredients are working. Your practitioner will fan you to help you to remain as cool and comfortable as possible. This part of the treatment only consists of a few minutes, and your therapist will be present the whole time to monitor your skin’s reaction.
How will the Treatment feel?
At SkinSpirit, we use DermaQuest & Medik8 resurfacing and peel products. DermaQuest chemical peels and resurfacers are entirely safe and non-invasive. The sensation of chemical peels and resurfacers will vary from person to person due to skin tolerance, skin condition, the severity of a skin complaint and the strength of the prescribed peel. However, most clients generally experience tingling, warmth, and tightness, all of which means the active ingredients are penetrating the skin and working to effectively rejuvenate the lower layers of the epidermis.
What should you expect following a Chemical Peel Treatment?
With all treatments, results will vary depending on the individual. Chemical peels are prescribed specifically to the individual’s skin type, concerns and goals. Recovery time can vary depending on the type of treatment carried out. It is important to follow the post-treatment guidance provided by your therapist to expedite the healing process.
You may be advised to:
Use prescribed products following your treatment – these must be used every day!
Avoid any sun exposure until the peeling phase has finished and sunscreen can safely be applied.
Please be aware that the ‘new’ skin visible once your skin has peeled will be more sensitive to the sun and more susceptible to damage if not properly protected.
Your skin will look worse before it looks better. Chemical peels are designed to remove the upper layers of the skin, causing the skin to heal and renew itself. Final results may not be visible for several weeks after your treatment.
Which Resurfaces and Chemical Peels do SkinSpirit offer?
Only the very best! Here at SkinSpirit, we use DermaQuest and Medik8 resurfacing and chemical peel treatments and pre / post-treatment skincare products. The DermaQuest range provides deeply exfoliating properties, blended with naturally occurring acids derived from fruits, nuts, milk and other natural sources. Acids include Lactic Acid, Mandelic Acid, Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid. These powerful ingredients help to unclog the pores, remove dead and damaged skin cells, deeply exfoliate the skin, reduce inflammation and stimulate the production of healthy new cells beneath the surface of the skin. Once the skin has healed, you will benefit from an improvement in open pores, blemishes/breakouts, acne, hyperpigmentation and fine lines. Skin is left soft, smooth, firm and glowing.
DermaQuest & Medik8 chemical peels and resurfacers can be customised to address your specific concerns specifically. To find the perfect skin peel or resurfacing treatment for you, we always conduct a thorough consultation, analysis and patch test to select the solution to suit your skin type, needs and lifestyle. As part of this consultation process, you will also be advised of any preparation that may be necessary to condition your skin ahead of your peel or resurfacing treatment.
Which long-term results can I expect?
After just one chemical peel or skin resurfacing treatment, your overall skin tone and texture will appear smoother, fresher, and more radiant. There will be a noticeable reduction in breakouts, blemishes, acne, hyperpigmentation, and signs of ageing. Depending on the severity of the skin conditions to be addressed, multiple treatments may be required to achieve optimum results. A series of 3 chemical peel treatments applied once every 4 weeks, or a series of 6 resurfacing treatments at 2 weeks intervals will usually allow for the very best results.
To optimise results, it is essential that your skin is maintained with good quality skincare products as recommended at your initial consultation.
Please note: Each of the DermaQuest & Medik8 chemical peel and resurfacing treatments offers a specific and slightly different range of benefits, which will be discussed thoroughly at the consultation.
How much Post-Treatment downtime should be expected?
Resurfacers generally require very little or no downtime. You can enjoy the benefits of your treatment straight away. However, with chemical peel treatments, up to 10 days of downtime should be expected. Skin will look worse before it looks better.
Immediately after both a chemical peel or resurfacing treatment your skin may feel warm, red and tight. Following a resurfacing treatment, these side effects usually subside within 1 – 2 days, with little more than light flaking of the skin. However, chemical peels induce a significant peeling of the skin usually on days 2-7 after treatment, which usually resolves itself by days 8-10. Following each procedure aftercare products are supplied to promote healing. Written aftercare advice will be provided along with recommended home care products to ensure the best possible results are obtained and skin heals as quickly and effectively as possible.
In order to support, enhance and protect your skin prior to and during your treatments, it is important to follow the instructions provided by your skincare professional, as this routine is designed to bring your skin to its fullest potential.
